Self-Taught

A significant portion of the comments on a recent post accused me of being “jealous” because the blogosphere is filled with talented nail artists who are “self-taught.” Apparently, there’s a widespread misconception that when one enrolls in beauty school for their manicurist course, that we learn how to do nails in that course!
You cannot imagine how hard this makes me laugh. Or rather, how hard it would make me laugh, if I wasn’t so busy shaking my head and then banging it against the wall in frustration.
I know, every so often, I run into another nail tech who reports that they had a great school experience. Were fortunate enough to land in a program with instructors who knew what they were doing, and actually cared about offering quality education and turning out skilled professionals. But let’s face it, the vast-- disappointing majority — of us, found ourselves flailing hopelessly, terrified that we had wasted the money on the schooling and would find ourselves unable to pass our state board exams, let alone hope to see success in a career that most of us were really looking forward to.
Some of us started long before we were even old enough to enroll in a licensing program. Started off polishing our own nails, painting our own nail art, having friends, family, and total strangers compliment us on our talent; ask us to do their nails too. Some of us were smart enough to enroll in a program as soon as they were old enough, some of us put it off for various reasons before we got around to it.
Like I said, some of us were doing our own nails before we made it a career. Some of us, not so much.
Most of us seek out continuing education, mentors, networking support, and online tutorials to help us with new ideas and techniques. And those of us who are lucky enough to achieve a comfortable level of success and find ourselves with a following-- and aren’t threatened by the competition — extend the favor by paying it forward to others who are looking for help with their ideas and techniques.
But I don’t know anyone who does nails who isn’t, ultimately, “self-taught.”

I think that even those of us that were lucky enough to have great teaching, still end up with our own style due to all the above mentioned things. (Networking, internet tutorial, mentoring...) People cannot simply claim that all there is to doing nails is to go to a school. Most techs I know still had to take extra schooling, or fumble through until they figure it out. Thanks Maggie! I love your blog!

I was lucky enough to have a teacher who did care. Although she was a cosmetologist and didn't have experience doing nails professionally (which is often the case), she supported us in every way she could. I am a cosmetologist who does nails, so I had a lot more time to practice nails in school than the nail techs. EVEN SO, I was hilariously unprepared after graduating. Never even used a drill.

I graduated one year ago this month. Of the 4 nail techs that graduated during my time in school, none of them still do nails. One never took her boards and the other three couldn't take the stress of the unavoidable learning curve aka turning out a bunch of crappy nails for a while until you get better.

After a full year booth renting as the only nail person in a salon, I am also about to take on a commission position in a more populated city at a salon where a VERY popular nail tech has just left. Problem-- I am NOT up to speed on my acrylics/fills. Instead of giving up this chance because of my lack of skills, I am looking at it as an opportunity to improve my skills and knowledge by working alongside other nail techs. Is it going to be stressful? Will there be times I am ashamed of my performance and terrified to ask my client what she thinks? Hell yes. But that's life. Fear of failure isn't a good reason to give up without trying. Wish me luck!

I couldn't agree more about the education - a large part of is being self-taught and good education is sometimes hard to find. I have found such a good education, and I was hoping I might be able to write a guest blog about it.

I have been a nail tech for 20 years and every time I take a class, meet with local school to recruit new tech I left with disappointment. I decided to open my own training center, recreating the love, passion, education and training the way it suppose to be. What would you suggests for my future students? What's important for new tech entering or refreshing their career?
