No Such Thing as Bad Publicity

A few days ago, a dear friend and fabulous fellow nail tech posted a link on Facebook. The link is to an article ... errr, blog? I'm not sure what to call it, but it's titled, "Is this the Worst Nail Trend Ever?" and it then proceeds to feature 25 photos of the ever-persistent "duckfoot" nail style.

Naturally, the friend who posted the link hates these nails, as do most of my colleagues from sea to shining sea and, if you visit the link and read the comments, you'll find that so do many of the people who have commented on the post.

I both love-to-hate as well as hate-to-love these nails. But I certainly don't feel as strongly as so many others do; it seems like people either loathe them or are willing to go to blows to defend them.

I shrug. I have opted to go with the flow and embrace any trend that brings clients to my book and nails to the forefront of fashion.

And I know that I am supposed to be appalled ... but I couldn't help but find myself squealing with delight at finding my own work in the #14 position with my Team Edward Twilight decal nails!

I immediately texted the client who is featured in that photo to tell her to check the link and let her know that she's famous. She is thrilled, although she did point out that her nails are the least flared of all those pictured.

I can't help it. I love the publicity.

And, I might point out, this is exactly the reason you want to watermark your photos! You never know where they'll end up and at least now anyone who sees those will be able to do a search for me by name. This is also why my new watermark has my URL on it. But that's another subject — I'm just bragging about the honor of being included in the "worst nail trend ever."

Pamela...Watermarking just means adding txt to your photo. add your name, website, etc.. whatever you want so people know who the photo belongs to :) you can easily do this by going to a photo editing site like picmonkey & adding txt to your photo... you can also make the txt transparent a little with their tools...

As for the duckfoot nails.. they break every rule..so yeah, I can see why they are hated or loved,lol... I've never done a set myself but might just do some if i can possibly find a person who would wear them, lol.
I think the key to getting them right would be to make sure they are wide enough that people know it was done on purpose & also they still have to be technically correct in that they need to be even & well finished.. I think bold art on them is a must to considering they are basicly a statement piece on your hands :)

I've only just started watermarking. What program do you use for yours?

I.am.torn. Part of me wants to think I will do whatever makes the client happy -- the other part says I would be embarrassed for people to think that's the kind of work I did. Oh well, no one has asked.....yet! I'll pray that they don't!

That's why I leave my name on mine. I like nails or anything that's different.

Duckfoot nails are as attractive as the duck face, which is NOT AT ALL [absolutely cannot stand them]. That said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion of what is attractive, that's why we have so many different nail polish colors and clothing styles. We all like to express ourselves in different ways.

I'm a successful nail tech and duckfeet nails made me a lot of money!! It's a preference as to who likes them or not!!! As a professional I have learned not to put anyone's work or preference down! Those are not ugly nails it takes a lot of talent to do those right! ;)

I neither love them nor hate them ... I feel everyones nails are a statement of themselves ... me personally, I have crazy nails on often ... but that's me crazy ... I have tried to make & wear a duckfoot successfully in both :)

ABSOLUTELY TRUE, Maggie! There is no such thing as "bad" publicity... From David Bowie to Lady Gaga, people have been building their brand sales on dislikes as much as likes!

I have seen some flare nails done tastefully... and some done very trashy... I love the P/W ones Gina Silvestro did when they were coming out with flare nails... and I would wear some that looked like those... But do them??? ABSOLUTELY!! If I have customers who want them, then that is exactly what I intend to do!!

I use Photoshop for my watermarks: I have an old version of Photoshop (7) and Photoshop Elements-- both will do the marks. I like that I can do true watermarks, with the transparent effect so I can run the text through the images without covering the images-- this make it harder to just crop my mark out of the image.

@Tasha c: I made the Team Edward nails with Testors ink jet decal paper. I recommend the white paper so the images show better. I've tried the clear before and was disappointed.

I think that this new trend is another shape that is not easily done and any tech who can sculpt them has true talent.
