Mobile Salon Reaches Cancer Patients

The beauty industry is known for contributing to worthy causes, whether its donating flip flops (and many other items) to earthquake relief efforts in Haiti or developing and purchasing pink products whose proceeds help fight breast cancer.

It’s in that thoughtful vein that Kim and Michael Becker founded Hello Gorgeous!, a four-year-old nonprofit that brings free beauty services to cancer patients and survivors. Having recently acquired its first bus for mobile services, the Hello Gorgeous! Mobile Day Spa parked itself on the show floor of America’s Beauty Show, and I got to take a tour.

This manicure table is inside the bus and is one of many pieces of salon furniture on board. The mobile spa also houses a pedicure throne, styling station, and reclining esthetics chair.

The Beckers hope this wall will be filled with testimonials from clients who’ve regained their sense of confidence thanks to the spa’s services.

Kim and Michael Becker proudly stand in front of the mobile salon, which they acquired in September.

Based on nominations by family and friends, the Hello Gorgeous! bus (which currently services Indiana but will be expanding its reach) will surprise the client with  flowers, chocolates, and beauty services that can include a manicure, pedicure, facial, seated massage, makeup application instruction, and hair care (or hair substitution) tips.

Co-founder Kim told me that the beauty industry can contribute to Hello Gorgeous!’s success in several ways. Manicurists, cosmetologists, and estheticians can volunteer their professional services, manufacturers (or anyone else) can donate beauty products (some items on the wish list include nail polishes, top coats, and base coats, a hair dryer, a ceramic flat iron, thinning shears, a disinfecting jar and disinfectant, and blank client cards), or you can make a monetary donation. For more information, to make a donation, or to nominate someone for the salon’s services, visit www.gorgeousgals.org.

I have serveral clients who have just found out that they cancer, some are breast some are lung. They will be going through chemo, their nails will become brittle and split and peel, is there something I can do to be proactive with their nail care to help they look good so they can feel good. What type of products for the natural nail work best. I just what them to feel good when they look at their nails, every little thing to lift the spirits of these true life fighters is a real bonus.
