Say Hello to Shellac

So it looks like the cat is out of the bag a little early and I’ve been given the go ahead to tell you all about Shellac from CND. It’s the top-secret nail color I’ve been wearing on my nails for the last five weeks. It’s a brand new product that goes on like polish, lasts for two weeks, and can be removed easily in just 10 minutes. I’m currently on my third application (I first tried Fedora for two weeks, followed by two weeks of Red Baroness, and now I’m on day 7 of Negligee.) and it’s still just as awesome as when I first had it applied.

Day 1
Day 6
Day 14
Day 9 of my second color
Day 7 of my third color

Before I tell you more about my experience…here’s the official release from CND:

CND (Creative Nail Design), the leader in professional nail, hand and foot beauty, is proud to introduce the first hybrid nail color after nearly five years of development in its state-of-the-art laboratory. Now you can say goodbye to chips, smudges, and dry time and say hello to Shellac™ Hybrid Nail Color! This revolutionary product applies like polish, wears flawlessly for 14 days of high-gloss shine, and is removed in minutes.

Shellac paints on like polish — base coat, color, top coat — and is cured in a UV light so there is zero dry time. The colors are hypoallergenic, and “3-Free” — no formaldehyde, toluene or DBP. Shellac will launch in a range of 12 varieties of shades, from pretty French pinks and whites, to siren red and rich darks. The formula is thin and flexible like polish, so it not only looks natural, it provides strong natural nail protection with a resilient mirror finish that resists dullness and chipping, even during the most rigorous activities.

As amazing as Shellac is on, removal is just as satisfying! No soaking, drilling or filing is necessary. Nails are wrapped in individual Shellac Remover Wraps —integrated cotton pads that limit finger and skin exposure to acetone by keeping it pinpointed on just the nail. Ten minutes of time in exchange for two weeks of perfect color is all it takes. Say good-bye to manicure frustration and hello to pure manicure satisfaction.

Shellac is a professional salon service launching globally in May 2010.

For more information about CND and local distribution, visit www.cnd.com.

It’s no joke. Everyone I came in contact with said my nails looked amazing — whether it was day 1 or day 14 — and all of my friends asked where they can go to get it done. (I’m can’t wait for the techs at my neighborhood nail salon, ManiPediCutie!, to start offering it. And they only do natural nails, but they’re as excited about this as I am.) Shellac doesn’t chip or scratch and the high-gloss shine really lasts over the course of the two weeks.

And when it came time to take it off, the Shellac Remover Wraps are a nifty little product to soak off the color. But the best thing about Shellac? There was absolutely no etching, buffing, or preparation on my natural nails. And I think this will be a huge selling point for clients who say they don’t want to wear nail enhancements because they don’t like their nails being roughed up.

Thanks to CND’s Jan Arnold, and nail techs Roxanne Valinoti and Tiffany Greco for taking the time to do my nails (and our art director Danielle Parisi’s nails) over the last month.

We’ll have a step-by-step demo in the May issue of NAILS and you’ll be able to see live demos at the upcoming trade shows.

I read this article and literally exclaimed, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!" I am so very excited to try this! I only have one question: Since you're not roughing up the nail, and it's like polish (only better), there shouldn't be any worry about "greenies", right?

Hi, It looks awesome. Can't wait to try it out ")
Could you tell me what was the natural nail condition after removing shellac? I mean did it weaken the nail surface?
And the second question is the shellac very hard or flexible?

I am in love with this product ... been using it for a few months now and it does exactly what it says it does. Durable and beautiful; flexible and resistant to chipping and I haven't broken a nail since wearing it. Awesome product. I cannot imagine any nail technician or natural nail manicurist being able to live without it.

As a nail tech, I havent been able to keep polish on. Will this product break down as well while I'm working with polish remover? I'm excited to add Shellac to my menu but I have yet to find someone to asnwer my questions. My supplier seems clueless and I want to start using it as soon as I can. Can I order straight from CND? It sounds like a no brainer to apply, but is it a good idea to attend a class?

As CND's PR Representative, I will do my best to answer all of your Shellac-related questions -

If you simple cannot wait until Premiere to get your hands on Shellac, you can get a headstart and purchase Shellac at the CND Booth at IBS Las Vegas, from April 24 - 26.

In terms of Shellac removal, I can vouch from personal experience that there is absolutely no impact on the natural nail - when using Shellac Remover Wraps (integrated cotton pads that pinpoint Acetone on the nail for ten minutes), Shellac color easily comes off and whatever is left on the nail can be flaked away with an orangewood stick. No filing necessary!

Shellac provides a shiny, hard, protective finish, but it does not feel thick or heavy on nails.

In terms of Shellac pricing, CND suggests that salons charge 50 to 100% more than the price of a basic polish manicure for the service.

CND's nail professionals are thrilled about wearing Shellac on their own nails because it does not dull or chip when using polish remover on clients.

To find out more information about Shellac availability, please visit the "Just For Pros" section on www.CND.com.

Thanks for your interest!

Rachel

I'm a new nail tech, and I've been trying Shellac on myself and on my clients for few weeks now, and all of us love this product sooooooooooooooooooooo much!!! Lots of clients are still in line to try this new exciting product!! CND is definitely helping my business grow big!!!!!!

To Gina: Did you put the product on too thick?? I had this problem for the first time I tired...I figured out that Shellac isn't the same as traditional Gel Polish, we have to put a very very thin coat, otherwise, it will get winkles/shrinked. Hope this help. =)

so i read another page that was also raving about this product...here is my issue with it. shows that it has to be light cured. my nail girl recommended it to me because i cannot afford right now to get my usual solar gel nails done. so what is the point if i still have to go in to get this stuff put on since it has to be light cured. heaven knows i cannot afford to go out and buy one of those lights to do it at home.

Hi,
I've been reading such great things of this new shellac. I must say I am very surprised because I had shellac done on my nails and it was very different. The procedure was excellent , getting out of the salon with my nails dry and very shiny was excellent. But, it might have last maybe 3days and one of my nails chipped!! By that time I was not working like I usually do (groomer) because I was on vacation and really wasn't doing anything at all, not even the pool or the beach. I'm sure this new product is good, but I wouldn't use it again.(neither I think that lady that went into the salon complaining about the same thing when I was getting my nails done!) Can someone tell me why my nails might have chipped in such a short period of time?? Maybe the way the person at the salon applied it or something??

Thanks and have a nice day!

Had to patch up toe nail, and remove all polish from nails (they just flicked off) redone them with opi polish as was going to a ball on Sat evening (beware !!!!!) Going back to salon on Wed to have them all redone - any suggestions as to why this may have happened?

I'm on week 3 of french shellac manicure. I can't believe polish on natural nails can look and last like this. I had mine done at Walmart-beautifully done.
My concerns are cost- very and safety. I would to become addicted to this grooming treatment only to discover some health problem later.

I had a shellac manicure done at the saloon and loved it so much so I figured I would by the base coat, nail polish, and a uv lamp and do my own. I did everything the way the nail tech did except for the top coat, is that an important step in drying? I sprayed with alcohol that I bought at the drug store is that the right kind? My nails turned out tacky...what did I do wrong?
Thanks,
BD

I own a tanning salon. And bought Shellac, tried it and used the tanning bed to cure it. Beautiful but turned out tacky. Why would this happen? What am I doing wrong because I love the product but want a perfect finish!

 re: Say Hello to Shellac

left by Natalie at 1/20/2011 3:26 PM
From what I've read on other sites I've learned that the tackiness when complete needs to be removed with 99% isopropyl alcohol as it is a byproduct of the curing process.

A gummy bottle of product is due to not shaking the product sufficiently to mix the ingredients thoroughly, resulting in a shellac treatment that doesn't adhere well and a gummy mess in the bottle that is so gooey that it isn't usable.
Seems they recommend you shake the bottle very vigorously for a minimum of 30 seconds.

I'm on my 3rd application of Shellac and LOVE, LOVE it! Everyone says 2 weeks...I've left my on for 4 wks...and it looks identical to the day it was done with the exception of nail growth at the base. No more snags, chips, broken nails, etc. I would recommend this to anyone...even those of you who say your nails don't grow or split...they won't with this product.
Also, the tackiness is from not wiping off the top coat after it's cured with alcohol and a cotton ball. If it's tacky, it will just wash off when you put your hands in water.

I had my nails done on Thursday and I love it. My gal lightly swabbed alcohol over the top of my nails as the last step. It was tacky for a minute or two, but never lost the shine. I would go back where you had it done and ask for a redo.

Wow to Shellac! By chance I did a "walk-in" appointment with a friend at my local nail salon so we could get mani-pedi's and chat. I tried the Shellac on my nails as it was the "new thing" and I must say again, "Wow!" I have been wearing the polish for 3 weeks. I was going to have it re-done before a vacation and redone - but it was fine and it was fine the entire time we were on vacation and it is still fine! The only problem is that my nails are growing so it has to be removed. Someone earlier mentioned that theirs was peeling, well I had heard that if you get moisturizer on your hands prior to application that the polish will not adhere. Additionally, my gall buffed my entire nail. Not like a sculptured nail sanding... just a light buff like they do (for me anyhow) when I get a french manicure. I thought you could just remove it with regular polish remover at home. I haven't done that yet as I am curious to see how long it can go. My first experience with this product was awesome!

After two shellac manicures at the salon, I ordered my own supplies and light. Most of the time I get 2 weeks before I have to remove and reapply. My problem is my natural nails have begin to have small chips on ends under the polish. I have been using some oil and the last week begin to use solar oil. Can someone tell me what is causing this? I have been using shellac since January.

I had my nails Shellacd 6 days ago and they look like they did on the first day ! Keep in mind I am a nurse and wash my hands all day long. Plus I have never been able to wear traditional polish due to my thin, brittle, short nails that split , peel, crack, and break . I couldn't even wear overlays such as acrylics because they always lift at my cubicle. I was told my nails produce too much oil. Who knows but nothing has worked for my like Shellac. I'm Sooooo happy I can beautiful nails and hands just like every other gal out there now. Beast thing I ever used in my nails!

I got my first application today after allowing my nails to be natural since March. I loved that it dried immediately and cured smooth and shiney. I was reading the previous questions and noticed alot of salon owners asking about thier product becoming too gooey to apply. I was wondering if perhaps it should be kept in a dark place as lamps are not the only sourse of UV...
