Bubble Nail Art: A New Trend?

I received several pictures of some unique nail art from nail tech Hoa Bui at Ann's Nail Salon in Philadelphia. The acrylic nails were built up, not out, in a style she referred to as “short, curve bubble nails” (not to be confused with “water bubble nails,” which are enhancements that feature encased nail embellishments suspended in water).

Bui says, “Bubble nails require building and sculpting of the acrylic until you get the look your client wants to achieve. You have to know exactly where the hump is supposed to be, then slowly build the nails. You start with a ball of acrylic in the middle of the nail, which is the highest part of the hump. The nail has to be thin at the cuticle, then it gradually gets thicker as it gets to the middle of the nail plate. Then from the middle of the nail plate it has to gradually get thinner at the tip of the nail, like a nice smooth hill. The curve has to be perfect.”

Have you seen this nail style before? What do you think of it? Is it popular in your area? Leave me a comment in Feedback.

I would NOT rock this,personally. However, to each his/her own. I don't think they're attractive @ all.

Ummm. EEWWW! If one has a desire to actually do this, attach an eye pin thru it and make a pendant!!!! great for earrings, brooches, but, NOT fingers...just one nail tech/artists opinion.

This is all new too me of course trends fadds they come and go. I get alot of hate mail about my Duckfeet nails but, this is something that is different that I've never seen here in California yet. Nail tech's around the world ask me, Why would you want your nails to appear wider and fatter than they already are? I would ask this Nail Tech. the exact question why? That's the new cool thing to do with your nails? "I don't know about this one"- scratching her head.
She's a good artist in her own and she basiclly is try to set herself aside as an artist to make herself diff and stand out from the others YOU GO HOA!

I love the nail art but the shape itself...not s'much. I guess when it comes to anything on our bodies, we prefer the smooth and sleek (stilettos) to the chunky and round!

The art is beautiful, i don't necessarily care for the style, but these times they are a changing. Some fashions will get picked up, and some will not. I think it is a very challenging thing to go against the grain and to do something different like this, so congrats Hoa.

Is this solely an East Coast style?

I think they look infected, personally. Like, if someone were to lance one with a pin, it would spew pus all over.

I agree with Ali Stout - they would make interesting jewelry. But not on nails. Ew.

In the nail industry creativity and imagination is a must. This is creative and imaginative and the art is good. With that being said....the sculpt/shape itself looks like a nail infection with a pus bubble waiting to be burst. It appears at first sight that it will need double strength antibiotics and a Penlac/Lamisil mixer. Clearly....not for me and would not fly in the Detroit Area! Keep up the creativity and imagination.

Ewww! Please tell me that even the die-hard trend followers won't be following THIS trend! I certainly hope that this doesn't become a trend and even if it does, I'll be so happy to miss out on it.

This is horrible.. I have been a professional nail tech for over 15yrs.. Im old and new school in my talent and craft.. I've seen a lot of styles come and go.. But to have your profession that you so desire to please customers with be degraded by such an unsightly application such as this one.. is just embrassing to your fellow nail techs around the world .. This is real talk.. be blessed!!

Personally I think they are butt ugly, but we all know styles and trends come and go. When I look at them I think of the time and product required in order to provide the service, and how much more I would need to charge for them. Then I wonder about the practicality of them - they sit up so high, they would get scraped up pretty bad. I am pretty sure they won't become popular around here either.

Hi, these are my pictures. I'm 25 years old and I have been in this business for a good 10 years now. These are a big trend in philadelphia, we have clients coming from all parts of philadelphia, jersey, new york, and delaware just to get these nails. Yes, it may seem over the top to a lot of people but I think my clients love it because its different. We have clients from all age groups getting these bubble nails. And we have a lot of salons trying to do these nails but can't do it. Everything is not appealing to everybody but art is art.

I think this new trend would be especially for teens and those who can't grow their nails just for them to reafirm that still nail art out there for them ...any way fashion comes and goes in a diferent ways, sizes and colours
why not?

While I don't think they are as repulsive as some techs have posted, I can appreciate the art work on top of them. They sort of remind me of the Russian orthodox Easter eggs (can't recall the exact Polish name, but I think it starts with a "p" and ends with a "y" or "i") that are popular up north.

That being said, the thickness is what I used to turn out when I was a newbie, so these are not for me nor my clientel.

i've never commented on anything online before.. but this .. i just can't hold back. This is absolutely gross , ugly, and disgusting . This looks like frog fingers! What aweful mistake did this nail tech make, and actually try to convince the customer it was good? oh man!! i've never seen this before and hope i never see it again. fingernails are supposed to look HUMAN whatever you do to them. The purpose of going to beauty school is so you don't do aweful things like this to people. The purpose of going to a salon is so people don't do horrible things like this to you. They should just revoke this tech's lisence!

wooow, how come this is the first time i heard about it? I really like this "Bubble nail art", it is looking great and practical too, becouse you are able to have short nails, but with great style.

I think they're cute!!!!! Definetely need to stay short, I don"t think this would look good on long nail's. But absolutely adorable:)
