A news item from the NY Times recently came across my desk. The title of the piece from the Fashion & Style section: “I Love What You Didn’t Do to Your Chipped Nails.” Catchy. The gist of the story is that hip teens and professional 20-somethings are — deliberately — wearing their nail polish chipped. It goes on to liken chipped nails to visible bra straps and obvious roots. Along with ripped jeans and messy hair, these all seem to be things that an older generation wouldn’t be caught dead sporting. But today’s youth has a more laid-back style and the perfectly chipped polish goes right along with the image they’re trying to portray.
So is this a new trend? And do salons need to worry they’ll see a drop in manicure appointments? I don’t think so. It’s silly. (Of course, as I type this, I just looked down at my nails and noticed that the polish is chipped. But I don’t think it looks cool. I’ve just been too lazy to take it off.)
