Leaps and Bounds

On a roller coaster, you know that feeling you get after you've finally made it to the top and your coaster car starts on that first big plunge? That's how I feel when I think about the huge progress we've made this week on the salon. The roller coaster is officially starting, and I'm so ready to roll with it.

The first big change is the status of the building - it's in full-blown demolition mode now. The concrete slab floor has been ripped out, so the plumbing can be installed. The roof is gone, since we're adding a second floor. Everything is being torn up and taken out, so it can be reinforced and redone. The side walls are practically the only original thing there. (After all, we do need those to keep the building from caving in). Nadine and I have both been visiting the site to watch it all unfold. It's so exciting.

Another huge piece of salon news is that we (finally) have our graphics, including the official salon logo. I'll post it up here as soon as I get a digital version. The salon name, ROB|B, is now all in capital letters. And, I can hardly believe this, but we actually have our business cards ready to print. We've been talking about that for how long - since January, at least?

I've also come up with a promotional idea that I think will work great with the LCD monitors we're putting in at the manicure stations. The salon will usually be closed on Mondays, but during football season, we'll do Monday Night Football nights. We'll do nail services in front of the big screens. Clients will get to watch the game and get pampered at the same time - I think it's the ultimate pleasure, or at the very least, the kind of thing that I would pay to do.

Stay tuned for more updates. There's going to be a lot going on in the next few weeks.

My wife is thinking about opening a salon and the more I read your blog the more I am interested in helping her launch her salon. What I am curious aboutis the type of inventory you will need to open the salon. How many autoclaves, scissors, etc will you buy? What are the disposable COGS for each manicure and pedicure? Also, what type of POS system will you be using?
