Trials & Tribulations

Normally, when people say “location, location, location,” they’re talking about the critical importance of location to a plot of real estate. When I say “location, location, location,” I’m referring to: 1) the original Beverly Hills, Calif., salon site I couldn’t get the funding for; 2) the signed lease that fell through when the landlord didn’t remodel the building as promised; and 3) my current Studio City, Calif., salon location — which, did I mention, almost completely fell through as well.

It’s been two years and countless days/months of borderline depression to get to this point in opening my first salon. I’m not going to pretend to be an expert, but I’ve learned a lot in the past two years, and even with the keys in my hand and a construction crew in the building, I’m learning new things every day. I’m going to be straight with you about my experiences opening a salon because I’m sure a lot of you have gone through similar experiences, and you’d call me on it if I tried to bluff. With this blog, maybe we can learn from each other.

Tootles to you Robbie! I have been looking for advice on opening a salon for years. I am a licensed nail tech and a real estate agent and I am still confused as to where and how to start. Money is a big problem because there is none! Keep up the good work and good luck!

I have stumbled upon this site and your blog entries. I'm intrigued by it as I, too, have a vision to open my own shop but a bit of a twist that I have yet to see. So my need is to push this idea quickly as I'm afraid it will be presented. My big question is money. I hope this is not diving into personal realms but, were you able to front most of the money or did you have investors- and if investors, how did you seek them and present your situation? For my idea- which I'm protecting at the moment, it is something that could be integrated with a current salon set up with a few accommodations. In your perspective, if I were to approach a current salon, do you think I would have to come in with money also (besides adding my products/or cost to make accommodations) or would they suffice with just a cut of earnings and basically 'rent' my space? Because, my vision is going to bring in business to them and maybe even double making them more appealing- so I'm doing just as much good for them as they would be for me! Whats your take on this- even though it's a bit vague?
