Friday Celebration: Asking for Help!

Another Friday has arrived. That means it is time to celebrate something you have achieved this week. February is just around the corner, can you celebrate still working toward your goal to be more healthy? How about celebrating deciding to recommit today? Maybe you drank a little more water than usual, parked farther away from the store for an extra walk, choose something healthy to eat on the go once versus not — nothing is too small to celebrate!

This week I am celebrating asking for help. I had come to the point that I felt like I was eating less, exercising more, hungry, grouchy, and gaining weight. Nothing is more disheartening than trying extra hard and losing ground. It was time to admit that in spite of reading all the things I was supposed to do and knowing the idea of being healthy was not enough. I was IM-ing with my favorite radio DJ Samantha after she posted some awesome pictures of her athletic ability on Facebook. She told me about a personal trainer that had changed her life. I have always thought of personal trainers as people who tweaked the muscle tone on celebrities or already-skinny people, but what did I really have to lose by giving her a call? So I had to suck it up, move past my mental stereotyping, and give her a call. To make it more intimidating, the gym that she owns specializes in pole fitness, so just the phone call made me sweat! I talked directly with Jen Kees and she was so nice, it did not even phase her when I said I was not a small person!

Now comes the hard part, a face-to-face starting consultation. I booked it and promised myself not to wimp out. I arrived at the gym and had second thoughts at the door — What could this really do for me? Have I lost my mind? I really do need help. I’m frustrated.

She was so little and cute I started to sweat but then she looked right at me and didn’t cringe or flinch (if you are at all heavy you know the look I am talking about, we get it all the time). I felt at ease right off the bat. Jen asked great questions and was encouraging with what I had done so far. She also let me know I may have been doing the wrong types of exercise for what I wanted to accomplish! Then she dropped the food journal thing on me ...lol...I know several bloggers had mentioned doing them and I kept thinking ugh, what a pain. It really is a pain, but it will give her an insight to what I am eating and thinking is healthy. Now I am wondering if I had the exercise thing wrong, if I have the food thing wrong too. Guess I will find out when I see her in a couple weeks!

If you have a crazy travel schedule or do not live near a personal trainer, like me, she offers a cool virtual training program, which is what I have opted for. I will pop in to see her occasionally to make sure I am doing things right. If you are interested in having Jen you can go to http://www.keescampstore.com If you prefer, do some research to see if there is a trainer in an area around you that offers a similar program.

I am feeling more in control of this healthy thing again; it didn’t even kill me to ask for help! So if you think you are doing everything right and the results are not forthcoming, consider asking for help! Jen already feels like what I was missing and I am so much more confident again in my ability to do this thing!

Have a great weekend! If you are doing the Super Bowl thing Hungry Girl had lots of healthy swaps that would be undetectable! Keep trying and don’t give up, we can all do this together.

Holly! I think it's so great that you're working with a trainer. You really do hit a plateau when you're doing it on your own, so hopefully this will be just the push you need to go to the next level of healthy living.

I can tell you from experience, journaling isn't fun...but I do think it works. It holds you truly accountable for every single thing you put in your mouth.

I'm excited to hear how it goes. Keep up the great work!

That is great that you asked for help. I do know the look & when I get it I immediately remember when I was skinny & hoped I never gave that look to anybody!

I agree with Hannah. Journaling does work & it holds you accountable. Just like this blog. It helps you keep the commitment you made to yourself. Weight Watchers says,"if you bite it, write it,if you nibble it, scribble it!" Even if you ate everything under the sun that day, write and forget it. Do better tomorrow. Good luck.
