Has anyone read the book “Skinny Bitch” by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin? I bought the book on Thursday and have read eight chapters so far. Wow. Makes you think about things. The book is not for someone with a queasy stomach. There are references to back up the statements of terrible conditions on farms. They write about the treatment of animals and the chemicals used to keep them “healthy.” I hope that there is some exaggeration.
Of course the authors are vegetarians now and after reading the first eight chapters, I have asked myself if I could really give up beef. I have the taste buds of a 12-year-old. I hate that I am such a picky eater. The book talks about how humans process food and how the human body is a great self-healing machine and how we do not need most of the things we put in our mouths. Like I said, it really makes you think. If you could get through the chapters with the graphic details, it is not a very long book to read. I can’t wait to finish the book.
And on another note, I wanted to share some helpful words from my past Weight Watchers leader. (I am still on her e-mail list.)
Food can fill our stomachs.
It cannot fill our souls.
Food can nourish our bodies.
It cannot nourish our hearts and minds.
Food can make our taste buds happy.
It cannot make us happy.
Food can give momentary pleasure.
It cannot give lasting pleasure.
Food can distract us from our pain.
It cannot take away our pain.
Food can be controlled.
It does not control us.
Food serves a purpose.
It does not give us purpose.
Habit Change of the Week: Imagine if this were a habit — every time you walk into the kitchen (or near a vending machine, or into the cafeteria or break room) you ask yourself, “Am I hungry?” Then make the decision from that standpoint. Even if the answer is no and you go for the food anyway, at least you’ve given yourself the information instead of mindlessly eating. It’s baby steps, people! Try it this week (maybe post the question in your kitchen!) and see what happens!
And then also remember..... “If HUNGER isn’t the PROBLEM, FOOD isn’t the ANSWER.”
